Ropecon 2010

Friday
We arrived at Dipoli around 16.30 and headed straight to check available RPG scenarios, finding nothing more interesting than demo room had to offer. Quick check through Kaubamaja, from where I picked up Atomic Highway on impulse, and we were off to demo room.

The demo we were interested in, Noitahovi, didn't start until 18.00 so we had an hour or so to check other stuff there was on sale, tho I really spent it reading Atomic Highway.

When Noitahovi finally started, I really got into con atmosphere. In a group of 7 gamers and GM of whom I only knew only 1, that's when I really enjoy the con gaming. On the game itself, I really had no expectations on how the game mechanics would work or what the world is like and how should I play whatever character I get.

After hearing the GM's explanation on the game I was really looking forward to playing it, the world just felt like really well thought of. Characters were introduced and I ended up with a trader from Kota people. It just felt like right choice for me since I immediately got some great ideas on how to play it just on hearing about it.

Most interesting aspect of the game was the fact that women were automatically stronger in magic and that the world was mathriarcal. Since one of us decided to play male character, much fun was had later on. Overall I would give 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 to our play session. It really wasn't ment for 7 gamers, but the decition that we were from opposing factions made things pretty much more interesting.

Aftergame was done in Keltsu with some beer and long drinks. I really liked to get to talk to other gamers which I didn't know from before. From there we headed to Sope's introduction of making a RPG. After that something quick to eat and sleep.

Saturday
Saturday started out with us making a tons of plans and ended up with first going to Ironspine demo, Trail of Cthulhu in the evening and trying out Lamentations of the Flame Princess on spare time. Routinary check through Kaubamaja and we were off to demo room. Ironspine wasn't there yet so we ended up checking, wth is LotFP. The guy running it gave us a quick presentation, promising that we could come and go as we liked. We took up the dice and started to roll. First party ended up on me being the great fighter Sergei, my friend a thief.. I mean a specialist and two magic users.

We ended up on dying, except one magic user who ran away. My fighter got eaten by grey ooze and two others by ghouls. Not a glorious end, but we didn't get disheartened by that. I ran to pick up my own copy and rolled a new character, ending with a gayish but straight elf with a company of sturdy and noble dwarf. That adventure, tho it had some trouble in the beginning, ended in a more glorious way with us actually gaining some treasure.

Evening adventure of ToC was a good scenario with a darn good GM. To sum it up, I'd have to that one of us got eaten alive by dog people, I shot myself in the head to not suffer the same fate and rest were locked up in a small padded room. In my book a very succesful scenario.

Again, something to eat and off to bed.

Sunday
The last day was finally here and we really didn't have anything else scheluded but a demo of Bliaron. The story and world were good but didn't really impress me as anything special, until we got to cast our first spell. That's when Bliaron really got me hooked. It was really easy and versatile and fast to do on the go. I could see that they had focused on that part. Tho the demo was short it really left a good imression.

Then it was time to head home. Something to drink from Alepa and we're off. Then we meet Miska Fredman and Samuli Ahokas from Ironspine. That really crowned that day.

Overall:
I got Atomic Highway, LotFP and a adventure book to it. Tried out some really promising finnish games and enjoyed conversations with game developers and other gamers. Very succesful weekend in my opinion.
